SCRIP Program Description

WHAT IS SCRIP?

SCRIP is a term that means “substitute money.” When you purchase SCRIP, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use SCRIP to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials. Every purchase you make earns money for our school. The Great Lakes SCRIP Center purchases large amounts of these certificates/prepaid cards from the participating stores and retailers at a substantial discount. Our school then purchases them from Great Lakes at the discounted price and re-sells them to you for full face value. The discount – from 2 to 15% or more – is our revenue. SCRIP is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything. Making regular household purchases, that families would make anyway, produces revenue. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, entertainment, even gasoline can be purchased with SCRIP.

With your first purchase, the profit the school receives will be split, so that the school gets 80% and the family gets 20% (up to $500 rebate per school year). Each participation point is earned by purchasing $1500; up to three points can be earned. Reimbursement is made in June.

• Each family has been/will be provided a unique account number that will remain the same year to year. This number should appear on all orders you place to ensure your purchases are accurately recorded. Please keep us informed if there are changes to your address, phone, or how SCRIP is sent home. SCRIP is sent home with your oldest student unless “parent pick up” is circled on the registration form.

• Once each quarter we will provide you with a summary of your purchases, sent home with your oldest child’s report card.

• You will have from June 1st, 2008 until May 31st, 2009 to fulfill SCRIP Participation and earn cash reimbursement. You may choose to donate your reimbursement back to the school. Please note that reimbursement checks or donation slips will not be issued for less than $10. In May, you must return your rebate letter for us to process your rebate.

• Cash, checks made out to St. Joseph School, and Mastercard, Visa, and Discover Card will be accepted as payment. If paying by credit card ($100 minimum) you must present your card at the time of ordering or have your credit card information on file. Payment in full is due at the time of ordering.

• SCRIP is not available for purchase during the month of July (or when the school office is closed), so plan ahead and stock up.

• SCRIP is the same as cash and should be handled accordingly. We will not be responsible for certificates that are lost, stolen, or misplaced while in your or your student’s possession.

• Generic SCRIP will be available in $10 and $25 certificates with an expiration date of May 31st, 2009.

HOW TO PURCHASE SCRIP

SEND IN AN ORDER FORM: Order forms are included with each Thursday newsletter, along with the “SCRIP Update,” and are also available in the school office. SCRIP that is “in-stock” is noted with an asterisk on the order form. If you need SCRIP that we don’t have on hand, we will order it on the next ordering Tuesday and you should normally receive it the following Thursday. If your order cannot be completely filled with our in-stock supply we will partially fill your order and fill the rest as soon as we receive our next order. Orders are placed to Great Lakes around 10:30 am, late orders cannot be added but will be held for the following week if it cannot be filled from our supply.

STANDING ORDERS: Standing orders are processed each Monday of the month, September through May. List the SCRIP you want to purchase and designate how often you want the order placed. You may postdate your checks for the date the orders will be filled or we can put the amount on your charge card if you have it on file with us. You may change or cancel your order with one week’s notice before the Monday it is to be filled.

Occasionally Great Lakes may run out of a particular certificate and it is placed on back order. If your order cannot be filled due to a backorder, we will partially fill your order and the backordered item will be sent home the following week. If at that time your order still hasn’t arrived, we will issue you a backorder slip. Please use the latest order form as changes often occur. A complete list of participating retailers and their usage guidelines is available in the school office. Ordered SCRIP is purchased on your behalf and is not returnable.

A SCRIP team will be set up to sell in the front lobby from 8:30am until 10:30am on school days. Throughout the rest of the day, if someone is available, SCRIP will be sold in the office until 3pm. However we encourage you to send your order in with your student. You may also FAX your order to 248-693-0958 or e-mail it to: SCRIP@stjosephlakeorion.org.

You will find a SCRIP registration form, credit card info form, and standing order form in the column at the right. Each family must register if participating in SCRIP, re-registration is only needed if changes are required. The credit card info form is an option for those families that wish to charge SCRIP purchases without having to physically bring the charge card in. Credit card information must be up-to-date and is kept in a secure location.
